Emigrant WildernessThe Troop 233 High Adventure program is open to those Scouts registered with Troop 233 who are at least 14 years old and have attained the rank of First Class or higher.
The purpose of high adventure activities is to stimulate good citizenship through teamwork and opportunities for leadership. In the process, we hope to promote a bond of respect for wild places and wild things. High adventure inspires each participant to undertake challenges and work together to meet common objectives. Perhaps the greatest outcome of high adventure is the satisfaction of successfully meeting the challenge of doing something that only a few others have attempted.
However, backpacking in the wilderness is not without inherent risks. Simple illnesses and minor injuries can be complicated by the fact that medical attention is not readily available. In addition, participation can involve exposure to life-threatening situations, such as falls, water accidents, and extreme exhaustion. Every effort will be taken to assure the safety of all participants. We have adults on these outings who have first aid training and Red Cross certification, and we will abide by a "safety-first" policy while on each hike.
The Boy Scouts of America requires all participants to have an up-to-date Class 3 medical form on file with the Troop, and all youth participants must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. If you are a youth participant, a Waiver of Responsibility form is also required.
A well planned program is both safe and fun. The high adventure programs are planned and run by the youth participants. Everything from planning the dates, routes, and menus to maintaining the equipment and obtaining wilderness permits is administered by the Scouts themselves. Experienced adult leaders help guide the Scouts through the process, but all of the participants have their own individual levels of responsibility that help the outing go smoothly for the entire group.
